BRATTLEBORO — In June 1954, the Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce declared “Mel Ferrer Day.” In the 1950s Mel Ferrer was a well-known actor and director in Hollywood, and on Broadway. He was invited to town to help raise funds in support of the Children’s Special Services Center at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
In 1954 Mel Ferrer and Audrey Hepburn starred in the Broadway play, "Ondine" and were married in September of that year.
