BRATTLEBORO — Fire department officials are proposing a 42-hour average work week rather than the current 56 hours.

"The reason this is so important is this directly affects the health and safety of our providers and our community," Fire Chief Jay Symonds said at the Select Board meeting on Tuesday. "A decrease in work hours increases the recovery time and aligns with the National Fire Protection Association and industry best practices for firefighter wellness.
